Tawas Point is located on a small peninsula sticking out into Lake Huron, adjacent to E. Tawas. The thumb area of Michigan required beacons to the north and south of Saginaw Bay for the increasing commercial traffic in the mid 1800's. Tawas Point Light was built to the north and Pointe Aux Barques Light to the south. The light was rebuilt closer to the lake in 1876 due to the shifting sand.

The light is situated at the tip end of Tawas Point State Park. The keepers quarters has become the residence for a high-ranking Coast Guard officer. During the summer months the Coast Guard offers tours of the light, while the property itself is open during park hours. Courtesy is requested while walking the property & along the adjacent wooded paths, due to the private residence.
