Tawas Point Lighthouse is located on a small peninsula projecting out into Lake Huron. The thumb area of Michigan required beacons to the north and south of Saginaw Bay for the increased commercial traffic of the mid 1800's. Tawas Point was built to the north and Pointe Aux Barques Light to the south. The lighthouse was rebuilt closer to the lake in 1876 due to the shifting sand.

The light is situated at the tip end of Tawas Point State Park. The keepers quarters has become the residence for a high-ranking Coast Guard officer. During the summer months the Coast Guard offers tours of the light, while the property itself is open during park hours. Courtesy is requested while walking the property & along the adjacent wooded paths, due to the station's private residence.
