The Kingston-Rondout Lighthouse is the 3rd light constructed at the Rondout Creek area. The 1st light was a wood structure built in 1838. Due to the exposure of the elements and yearly river ice, it had badly deteriorated. In 1866, the lighthouse board decided to build a 2nd light next to the old one. The new lighthouse was built of bluestone with an attached two story keepers house.

During the 1870's the Army Corps of Engineers built 2 dikes at the mouth of Rondout Creek. The new light became too far inland of the "new" mouth to be of much use, so a decision was made to build the third (present day) light at the end of the northern dike. The structure was completed in 1915, and was fitted with a 4th order Fresnel lens. The proper name is "Rondout North Dike Lightstation"
