The first piers along the entrance to Sodus Bay were constructed in 1834, 9 years after the Old Sodus Point shore light became active. A minor beacon was added at the end of the pier, and later replaced in 1858. The first permanent light on the piers was added in 1870. An inner pier light added in 1895 was eventually torn down.
The present day pier light was constructed in 1901 at the end of the west pier. The main shore lighthouse was deactivated upon completion of this new pier light. It was deemed not necessary for both lights to aid navigation in the area. The keeper's quarters remained in use by the Coast Guard until 1984, though.
