The first lighthouse on the island was built in 1794, but was later wrecked by a 'waterspout' during the War of 1812. The new Bald Head Lighthouse was built in 1818. The 90 foot tall octagonal tower was constructed of brick walls with a rough plaster exterior finish. The walls are 5 ft. thick at the base, and 2 ft. thick at the top. The interior wood steps spiral around the perimeter, with 5 landings.

The light was extinguished by the Confederate Army in 1861, but was relit after the war. It was darkened once again in 1866, then back on in 1870. The light remained a primary aid until 1903, when it was downgraded to a harbor light. The small lantern room was added at that time, and was placed 'offset' to allow access from the trap door. The keeper's quarters was rebuilt and tower restored recently.
