The present lighthouse at Cape Lookout was the 2nd built on the island in 1856, replacing the 1st from 1812. The keepers quarters was built in 1873, & the tower's new paint scheme was added.
Confederate troups removed the original 1st order Fresnel lens in 1862. A replacement lens was later added in 1867. The beacon is still active today, and the station was fully refurbished in 1992.
