Currituck Beach Lighthouse was built in 1875, the last lighthouse constructed on the Outer Banks. An attached one story brick building was used for oil storage tanks and a workshop. The two story keeper's quarters was built in 1876 of wood framing. The station was automated in 1939. By the time the light was leased to the conservationists, it was in major disrepair.

The task of refurbishing the keepers quarters, storehouse, and assistant keeper's house began in 1981. Today, the work is almost complete, and the station is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The 1st order Fresnel lens is still in place. During our visit, we had the opportunity of entering the off-limits lantern room to actually walk inside this awesome lens.
