Like it's close neighbor, The West Pierhead Light, Cleveland's East Pierhead Lighthouse was constructed in 1910 to mark the end of a very long protective breakwater wall. The cylindrical steel tower stands at 30 foot tall, and was built on a circular platform of steel, concrete, and stone. Although the base is wearing down, the light is in great shape.

The long breakwater walls form Cleveland's Inner Harbor. The harbor consists of much calmer waters, which protects the shoreline & ships from the pounding of Lake Erie's storms. The western entrance into the harbor is between these two lights. An eastern entrance is also provided far down the breakwall at the East Entrance Light.
