Established in 1821 (only a few years after Perry's famous naval battle), the lighthouse is the oldest light in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. The 65 ft. tower is built from stone, and has hardly changed in it's 1 1/4 century existance. In the late 1800's, the light was raised 10 ft. with an additional window added. The original 4th order Fresnel lens is displayed at the Coast Guard Station.

Even though this an active station, the grounds are always open to the public. The tower is also open for climbing during selective weekends in the summer, and as part of the annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival. Just up the street from the light is the Schoolhouse Gallery, an excellent retail store for the lighthouse fanatic, full of posters, paintings, sculptures, apparel, & other nautical items.
