Old Fairport Main Light was built in 1825, the same year the Erie Canal was completed. The beacon was replaced by the Fairport W. Breakwater Light in 1925, and was targeted for demolition. Local appeals to save the historic light succeeded, and the Village of Fairport Harbor leased the property from the Coast Guard in 1941. It is listed on The National Register of Historic Structures.

Fairport Harbor Maritime Museum is housed within the attached keeper's quarters. The museum, which was dedicated in 1945, was the very first Great Lakes marine museum opened in the U.S. The museum artifacts mainly pertain to the past life on the Great Lakes, and includes the pilot house from the freighter Frontenac. The tower is open for climbing up the 69 spiral steps to the top platform.
