Vermilion Light was built in 1990 as an exact reproduction of the original light that once occupied the end of a breakwater in the late 1800s. The original light was in active use until the depression years of the 1930s. After the foundation and tower had deteriorated from many Lake Erie storms, the Lighthouse Service eventually demolished it. Local fund raising resulted in the construction of the reproduction light.

The Vermilion Light is adjacent to the Inland Seas Maritime Museum. The museum is located within the former Wakefield Mansion, and is one of the finest maritime museums within the Great Lakes region. It houses a large library dedicated to Great Lakes maritime history, the Fresnel lens from the Spectacle Reef Light, timbers from Capt. Perry's ship The Niagara, and the pilot house from steamship Canopus.
