The 1st light built at Beavertail in 1749 was only the third lighthouse ever built in colonial America. The British had burned the second in 1779 while withdrawing from the bay. The present light was built 1856 with granite blocks & a stucco keeper's quarters. It is the 3rd light to be built at the site. The original tower's foundation is still visible on the property.

We visited the light in the Fall of 1997 & 1998. I snapped the adjacent photo during the "Harbour Lights 2nd Reunion" bus tour in 1998. The keeper's quarters was open for touring, while a bagpipe player strolled the grounds & "keepers" were dressed in period costumes, chatting with the visitors. Castle Hill's beacon can be seen across the bay from Beavertail.
