Hog Island Shoal Light was built in 1901 to replace the Hog Island lightship, which was stationed at or near the dangerous shoals since 1886. The lighthouse is a caisson supported cast iron "sparkplug" light, commonly built from 1871-1915. The light was one of thirteen that utilized pneumatic pressure tubes vs timber cofferdams for the foundation's construction.

The light consists of 5 levels. The galley occupied the 1st level, living quarters filled the 2nd & 3rd, a storage room & workshop was on the 4th, while the lantern room topped off the final level. The station was originally equipped with a 5th order Fresnel lens, but was upgraded to a 4th order classical lens in 1903. The beacon now features an automated modern lens.
