Pomham Rocks Light was built in 1871 on a small outcropping of rocks along the E. Providence River. The property remains much the same today as when it was built. The "Second Empire" style building with mansard roof is very similar in design to Colchester Reef & Rose Island Lights. The light remained active until 1974. Mobil Oil bought the island in 1980.
I snapped this photo during the Harbour Lights 2nd Annual Collector's Reunion, aboard a Narragansett Bay cruise from Providence south to Newport. I also took photos on the previous day from the east shore in Riverside. It was necessary to make arrangements with the Providence Sanitary Dept. for access through their property.
