Blowing Rock is a formation located high above the Johns River Gorge, on the Continental Divide. The formation creates one of the few spots on earth where it actually snows upward.
An ancient Indian myth states that a young maiden's Cherokee lover had jumped off the cliff. After she prayed to the Great Spirit, a strong wind blew him safely up to the rock's summit.
