Rock House is a tunnel shaped corridor located 1/2 way up a 150 ft. high blackhand sandstone cliff. The cave's ceiling is 25 ft. high, while the main corridor is 200 ft. long and 20 to 30 ft. wide. The cavern was eroded out of the middle section of the sandstone cliff. The resistant upper stone layer forms the roof and the lower layers forms the floor. Water leaking through a horizontal joint running parallel to the cliff face caused the hollowing formation in the softer sandstone.

Native Americans frequented the cave throughout history, and the presence of chiseled out troughs in the stone floor are still evident. When rainfall is abundant, springs of water permeate through the sandstone and flow into these troughs. In this way, residents were able to maintain a small water supply. Other rumoured residences of the cave including robbers, horse thieves, murderers and bootleggers earned the cave a reputation as the 'Robbers Roost'.
