Bald Head Island (also known as Smith Island) is located at the southern mouth of the Cape Fear River, east of Southport on the mainland. Bald Head Island is a world-class resort and exclusive residential enclave, and can be reached via ferry from Indigo Plantation Marina in Southport. The island contains a golf course, nature trail, beaches, miles of salt & tidal marshes, and of course the historic "Old Baldy" Light.
I snapped the adjacent photo of this particular marsh from within the Bald Head Lighthouses's lantern room, high above the marsh's edge (see the "Lighthouse Gallery" for a photo of the light). The salt marsh and light are within a short walking distance from the docks, but transportation would be needed to travel much further along the island. Autos are not permitted, but golf carts are for rent near the ferry docks.
