Old Mission Point is located at the northern tip of a 17 mile long "finger" of land, which starts at Traverse City to the south & bisects the Grand Traverse Bay down the middle. The northern tip of the peninsula happens to be located on the 45th parallel of lattitude, half way between the north pole and the equator. The Old Mission Point Light is also located on the tip (see the Lighthouse Gallery).
The beach is rock free until you reach the water's edge. From there, the lake extends a couple hundred yards at a one to two foot depth, with large rocks & boulders scattered all around. We walked out on a small sand bar approximately seventy five yards out into the lake, without even getting wet. It was a beautiful setting on an overcast and windy day, with the morning sun peaking out of the clouds.
