Brandywine village once surrounded the 65 ft high falls and 120 ft deep gorge. George Wallace built a sawmill in 1814 to utilized the fall's power. Soon the village added a grist mill, woolen mill, and whiskey distillery. In 1824, the sawmill was transfered to Wallace's sons who formed the Wallace Brothers Company. Business thrived for the next few decades, but then deteriorated with the advent of the Ohio & Erie Canals.
Cleveland & Akron benefited from the new canal, but Brandywine village slowly dissapeared. Only Wallace's 1848 house & barn remain from the once thriving village. As for the waterfall, the rocks at the base were formed more than 400 million years ago. Brandywine Creek began about 10,000 years ago after the glacial retreat. Berea Sandstone overhangs softer Bedford Shale, which create the cascading undercut effects.
