The Cleveland Zoo's many Borneo Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) are located within the upper level of the Rain Forest building. The glass encloser features both female & larger male species. Orangutans are not very social, but can live up to 59 years old. I snapped this photo of the smaller female Orangutan, which enjoyed using a handy burlap sack as her blanket & hiding place.
Thousands of animals from seven continents roam Cleveland Zoo's 165 rolling wooded acres today, including 2 indoor acres of tropics within the newer glass Rain Forest building. Today's Cleveland Zoo utilizes conservation & breeding programs to supply nearly all of the new exhibit animals. In the past, new animals were traditionally collected from the wild through African safaris.
