Cleveland Zoo was originally founded in 1882 within University Circle, with just a herd of deer. In 1909, the zoo moved to it's present day location in the Brookside Park area. Animals were traditionally collected from the wild, resulting in an African safari in 1955 to obtain species. The safari supplied the Zoo with 3 elephants, 2 hippos, 2 rhinos, and 3 giraffes, along with many other smaller animals.
Zoos utilize conservation/ breeding programs to supply nearly all new exhibit animals today. Thousands of animals from 7 continents roam the Zoo's wooded acres today, including two indoor acres of tropics within the Rain Forest building. I snapped this photo while roaming along Waterfowl Lake. Wade Hall, The zoo's 1st building from the University Circle site, has also been relocated here.
