The Cleveland Zoo was originally founded in 1882 in University Circle with just a herd of deer. By 1909, the zoo began the move to it's present day location in Brookside Park. Exhibits were gradually increased through the decades to form the present day zoo. Animals were traditionally collected from the wild in the past, resulting in an African safari in 1955 to obtain species. The safari supplied the Zoo with 3 elephants, 2 hippos, 2 rhinos, 3 giraffes, and other small animals.

Today, the breeding and conservation programs utilized by most zoos around the world supply nearly all new exhibit animals. The glass & steel enclosed RainForest building was added in 1992, with 2 acres of exhibits and state of the art innovative displays. I shot the adjacent photo of the 1500 lb Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) as the zoo was closing, and we were rushing past as many of the exhibits as possible within the Northern Trek area. The bear seemed a little lonely at closing time.
