Lock 37 North (Portage Summit Level) - 14 Mile Lock - Alexander Lock

Chamber of Lock 37 looking south

About the Lock: South of Tinker's Creek is Lock 37 and Wilson's Mill. The lock is still watered today as is its spillway to the east. A water control gate exists just south of the lock. A vintage photo of the lock can be seen here.

The area near this lock was once known as Alexander to the locals. That's because the current Wilson's Mill was originally known as Alexander's Mill. The building was built in 1855 by Robert and Andrew Alexander and was the last mill on the Ohio & Erie Canal to use water as a power source. It ceased using the canal for a power source in the 1970's but is still open today as a feed and seed store run by the Wilson family. The grist mill was powered by the water in Lock 37's spillway, typical of mills along the canal. A grocery store and saloon also existed at the lock at one time.
