Barberton Trailhead

Location: The Barberton Trailhead is located on Fairview Avenue between Van Buren Road and Norton Avenue in Barberton. It is accessible from the CanalWay Ohio National Scenic Byway (Fairview Avenue) and has parking lots on either side of the road.

History: Barberton was founded in 1891 by Ohio Columbus Barber, and industrialist who was looking for a new location to locate his match company in Akron. He created the Portage Strawboard Company in New Portage to make boxes for his Diamond Match Company, the largest match business in the United States. In 1891, he laid out a town with a natural glacial lake as the centerpoint and that included the Tuscarawas River, Ohio & Erie Canal, and the railroad. That lake became Lake Anna, named after his daughter, and the town was called Barberton, home to the many employees of Barber's various companies, making it truly an industrial town. Barberton grew to encompass the earlier settlements of New Portage and Johnson's Corners. For more on Barberton's history, see the city's homepage on the web.
