  • Short Notice Work Party

Hello, Could you get this out to whoever you think might help. If all goes without a hitch, it shouldn't take too long, but we all know how things can happen. Help is needed especially on Saturday, the 6th about 7 a.m. HELP!!! The P-3 footings need replacing. The new pads were formed/poured the morning of the picnic/golf outing and had to cure approx. 3 weeks. So.... Help is needed the evening of September 5 for preparation (getting the "stuff" together). September 6th - 7 A.M. until however long it takes, for jacking; removal of old footings/pads; leveling ground; etc. and installation of new pads. This will take some help as the pads were not poured next to the P-3 and will have to be moved from behind the museum (it's a long story). This is not a full blown work party event i.e. food, etc. BYOB Anyone who can lend a hand will be GREATLY appreciated. THANKS A LOT, Bob

Surprise Birthday Party for Jeff Coupe - hope he doen't read this!!!

    Shipmate Update

    Commander Frank J Henderson VP93 - WWII

Retired Commander Frank J Henderson departed Aug 26 2008 to his final assignment! He had turned 100 on Dec 25 2007 but had developed back problems that became increasingly painful and restricting. Ultimately the Warfin levels got out of control and we lost him. He was active and alert up until the day of his death. We will miss him. He lived with his son Frank A for 24 years after the passing of his wife Gertrude.

AWC Dave Simons has passed on

    From his wife Cindy:

David is now with God. I received a call from the nursing center at 6:00 this morning. I went yesterday & said my goodbyes & told him it was time for him to let go & for him to go be with God, his parents, brothers, sisters & friends. Per his request, there will not be any services. He will be cremated & his ashes will be sent to the United States Navy for the burial at sea program. I'm fine right now. I've been trying to prepare for this for a long time. I'm glad that we took the opportunity to do things & visit family & friends while his was still able to. Thanks to all of you for the support you've given us.

    Command History: Patrol Squadron 93

"established in August 1976, Patron Squadron (VP-93) was based at the Naval Air Facility Detroit, Michigan and is under the operational control of Commander Reserve Patrol Wing Atlantic. VP-93 was the first squadron to be established in the entire patrol community since 1970. It was only fitting that it was given the designation of Patrol Squadron 93, a World War Two Squadron with a rich and proud history within Naval Aviation.

"The original VP-93 was established on 5 January 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia. It began flying PBY's in the North Atlantic. While deployed it provided convoy cover, bombing of enemy submarines, and conducted numerous heroic missions recovering downed allied aircrews. The squadron was redesignated VPB-126 in the middle of the war and was finally deestablished on 27 June 1945.

"Since its establishment, the "Executioners" of VP-93 have achieved a record which adds to the luster of the original squadron. In 1978, the squadron was awarded the highly coveted CNO Safety Award for its outstanding safety program and enviable safety record.

"The past eighteen years of flight operations have ranged from assisting the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, monitoring the environmental effects of the Campeche Oil Spill, assisting the President with his "war on drugs" in the Caribbean, flying joint military exercises with the NATO Forces in Canada, and tracking Soviet submarines throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters of operation, patrolling the Bosnian coast, and enforcing the blockade of Haiti.

"As the squadron got ready to close the hangar that housed Patrol Squadron 93, seven of the planes, were sent to a military resting place in Arizona and the eighth plane was sent to the Selfridge Museum. Patron Squadron 93--"the last of its breed in the Midwest"--was officially disestablished on Saturday, 17 September 1994."
